Lighting Design

A focused, room-by-room lighting plan to support how you live, work and relax at home.

Lighting Design is a dedicated service that looks only at how your spaces are lit — from light-point placement and fixture selection through to colour temperature, CRI and practical switching. It is designed to sit comfortably alongside your broader interior design, whether that is already resolved or still in progress.

Service overview

What lighting design covers

This service is ideal if you are renovating, building or reworking key rooms and want to feel confident that every light-point, fitting and switch has been carefully considered. It focuses on:

  • Thoughtful placement of light-points to avoid dark corners, glare and cluttered ceilings
  • Coordinating ceiling, wall and feature lights with joinery, furniture layouts and focal points
  • Selecting appropriate fixture types and formats to suit your interior style
  • Recommending colour temperature and CRI for comfortable, natural-feeling light
  • Planning dimming and switching so each room can shift easily between tasks and relaxation
  • Providing practical documentation your builder or electrician can follow with confidence

If you also need support with furniture, finishes and overall interior direction, Lighting Design can be combined with Full Service Interior Design or Interior Design Consultation depending on the scope of your project.

What you receive

Included in a lighting design engagement

The exact format will vary depending on the stage of your build or renovation, but a typical Lighting Design package may include:

  • Lighting strategy — an overall concept for brightness, mood and feature emphasis across the home.
  • Layered lighting plan — recommendations for ambient, task and accent lighting in each room so spaces can move from practical to atmospheric as needed.
  • Light-point placement — indicative positions for downlights, pendants, wall lights and feature fittings coordinated with cabinetry, benchtops, artwork and key furniture pieces.
  • Fixture guidance — suggestions around fixture type, format and finish, along with notes on beam spread, glare control and suitability for each space.
  • Colour temperature & CRI recommendations — guidance on kelvin range and colour rendering to support comfortable, natural-feeling light throughout your home.
  • Dimming and switching logic — practical suggestions for grouping circuits, dimming and control points so everyday use feels intuitive.
  • Documentation for trades — a concise summary or marked-up plan you can share directly with your builder, electrician or project manager.

Every project is tailored. The level of detail and number of spaces covered will be confirmed with you before work begins.

Process

How the lighting design process works

The process is deliberately straightforward, with each step giving you clarity before moving on to the next.

1. Briefing and review

We begin with a focused conversation about your home, the rooms in scope and how you use them day and night. At this stage we will usually:

  • Review architectural plans, joinery drawings or sketches, and any inspiration images you can share
  • Clarify the spaces to be included, any existing fittings to retain, and any specific problems to solve
  • Confirm practical constraints or requirements from your builder, electrician or lighting supplier

2. Concept and light-point planning

With a clear brief, we develop a cohesive lighting concept and translate it into indicative light-point locations. This stage typically includes:

  • Defining the overall lighting mood and level of brightness for each room
  • Mapping light-points to support circulation paths, work surfaces, seating areas and key features
  • Balancing general, task and accent lighting so ceilings remain calm and considered

3. Fixture, colour temperature and control recommendations

We then refine the plan with fixture and technical guidance, including:

  • Suggestions for fixture types and formats suited to each location
  • Recommendations for colour temperature and CRI to create consistent, comfortable light
  • Notes on dimming options, switching locations and sensible circuit groupings
  • Adjustments based on your feedback before documentation is finalised

4. Final documentation for your team

At the end of the process, you receive clear information you can pass straight to your trades. This may include a room-by-room summary, indicative plans or mark-ups, and concise notes for your builder or electrician.

Is this the right fit?

When to choose a lighting-specific service

Lighting Design is a good fit when you are comfortable with your floor plan and interior direction, but want expert input on how your spaces are lit. It works particularly well for kitchens, bathrooms, open-plan living areas and key circulation spaces where light-point placement and switching have a big impact on everyday use.

If you are still resolving layouts, finishes or furnishings, we may recommend starting with an Interior Design Consultation or engaging in Full Service Interior Design, with Lighting Design included as part of that broader scope.
